Captain’s Blog, August 19th

I watched the Ebor yesterday on a running machine in the Gym. It was a strange thing to do I know. I had been intending to beast myself on the treadmill whilst watching the cricket, but instead I discovered that channel 4 was actually available on my mini screen and I was able to watch Jamie Spencer drive Dirar to victory. Spencer has always been top class in my book, but at the moment he is confident and determined and his display of emotion when crossing the line in front yesterday was indicative of his focus at the moment. I would have liked to have shown similar emotion when completing my 10k run but in truth I could hardly speak let alone do anything else. The Ebor itself did not really inspire me although watching Spencer punch the air made me dig in for another minute or so. I love it when sportsmen or women show emotion and when they do I always find myself experiencing a rush of adrenalin. After the Ebor finished I had to rely on my iPod to get me through the last twenty minutes. For me such moments require Bruce Springsteen, normally his version of This land is your land or the River get me over the finishing line, although yesterday I did go for two renditions of No Surrender just to seal the deal. Having completed my run I headed for the swimming pool to cool down and was planning a soak in the Jacuzzi, but a rather large eastern European gentleman wearing bright pink shorts decided to launch himself into the bubbling water just before I got there and I decided to let him be the sole occupier of the whirling pool. I have nothing at all against eastern Europeans, but I draw the line at bright pink shorts.
I lost money yesterday by backing Shropshire in the Gimcrack, no excuses it was a terrible selection and I deserved all that I got. I was quite annoyed with myself for backing him and knew my fate as soon as they had gone a furlong. I hate it when you do not even get a run, but that was the case yesterday and I apologise for such a dreadful selection here on the Blog.
As for today I am working at Epsom today and will be pleased to be joned by Andrew Barr who will be analysing all of the action from 5.10pm onwards. There are six races in total for us to get stuck into and my biggest hope at the moment is that the forecast heavy rain does not arrive until after Racing. If it does my Racing UK anorak will be fired up and ready for action. It has not seen the light of day recently, but it may well have its day in the sun or should I say rain later today.
I will be heading to Epsom at around 3.00pm so that gives me time to head to the Gym again and then to do some prep work for tonight’s show. Have a great day.
No Surrender!
