Captain’s Blog February 26

26 Feb

I am a big fan of Frankie Dettori but he was a little bit over confident on Aspectoflove in the Balanchine at Meydan yesterday. He was beaten by a very decent filly in the shape of Deem, but he did appear to be a little over confident int he closing stages. On paper Zirconeum was the main danger and it looked as if Frankie felt that filly was his main danger and once that filly was beaten he thought he had the race sewn up. Don’t get me wrong he did not drop his hands or anything like that, but he was just not as urgent as he could have been in the last 100 yards. He looked over his shoulder at the big screen and at Zirconeum who was dropping away and probably thought he had the race in the bag but Deem flew down the outside and nabbed him on the line to win by a short head.

I am not a Grandstand Jockey and am a fan of Frankie Dettori, but it is because I am a fan that I am disappointed that he did not win the race. He should have won, indeed normally he would have done, but he is riding with such confidence at the moment and the Godolphin horses are going so well he simply took victory for granted. Come on Frankie you are much better than that.

It is a reminder to all Sportsmen that no matter what sport they compete in they are never too good to forget the basics and skills that got them to the lofty position that they occupy. We all need reminding that we have to keep our standards high from time to time and this was Frankie’s wake up call.

I need a kick up the backside today as I have got plenty to do. Firstly the Gym beckons once again before a trip to Tesco and then I am on curry making duty tonight prior to watching some Rugby League on Sky. I am also going to try and fit in a bit of punting somewhere along the line and with Warwick getting the all clear this morning there is plenty to go at today. We have to hope tht that the rain stays away so that kempton does not get too saturated because they have an excellent card there tomorrow. The rain is scheduled to arrive big time on Sunday but you never know with forecasts these days.

I made some excuses yesterday for the poor performances of my selections here on the blog on tuesday but I can make no such excuses today. My selections yesterday were to be frank very poor indeed and bombed out big time. I will try to get back on board the wagon today.

Time to put together a shopping list and rack up some more Tesco Clubcard points. Have a good day.

Todays Selections

2.30 Southwell – Tomintoul Star (each way 5/1 Bet365)

7.40 Wolverhampton – Taboor (each way 6/1 Betfred)
